When we are thinking about drug abuse, we don’t always think that there’s really people older than 60 that’s really abuse drugs. However, if you’re looking at the facts, then you’re realizing that drug abuse doesn’t have an age limit. Everyone, can abuse all kinds of drugs, no matter what age they might be. According to statistics from the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information, more than 17% of people over the age of 60 are abusing prescription drugs. There are different reasons why so many of the older generation are prescription drug abuse. The statistics show that from these 17%, 44 percent is women and only 23 percent are men that are abusing prescription drugs.

Most of us, can’t really imagine that there’s really people over the age of 60 that’s starting to abuse drugs like prescription medication. But, the one thing that we don’t really think about is the pain that older people must bear, because of age. Here are some of the most common reasons why people over the age of 60 are thinking about prescription drug abuse:
- The older people are getting, the more sleeping becomes a problem. Sleeping pills are very dangerous and can be easily been abused. When you take one sleeping pill, and you see that this really makes you sleep better, you will start using these pills more and more, until you’re starting to abuse these pills. The results will be that you can’t get to bed and sleep at night without taking your sleeping pill.
- Chronic pain is one of the most common reasons why people over the age of 60 starts abusing prescription medication like painkillers. Chronic pain can really influence one’s daily function, and drinking painkillers too often can start becoming abusing these pills so easily.
- When we’re getting older, we have a higher risk of losing our loved one. Abusing pills can also be used to try to get rid of the pain of losing that one special person in your life. Most people over the age of 60 have been living with their life partners for a long time, and losing these partners due to death can really be devastating to most people.
- The same goes for people of 60 that don’t get any phone calls or visits from their children. The pain gets so much, which drug abuse seems like the best way to deal with that kind of pain.
Drug abuse isn’t only a problem to young people and teenagers that’s experiment with drugs and alcohol. People over 60 years, can also start abusing drugs for all kinds of reasons. Prescription drug abuse is more common among older people than drug abuse like cocaine and heroin, but can be just as dangerous.
